Toshiba’s Strata product line has been a leader in the key systems market since the late 1980s, with the Strata DK being the first digital key telephone system released in 1989. Over the years, Toshiba has continued to innovate and improve its Strata product line, introducing new systems and features to meet the evolving needs of businesses.

One of the most significant enhancements to the Strata DK56 and DK96 systems came with the release of Strata DK Release 2 in 1990. This update set the standard architecture for Toshiba’s current digital product line and brought many important enhancements to the Strata product line.

In 1991, Strata DK Release 3 introduced digital telephones and data switching to the Strata DK24/56/96 systems for the first time. This was a major milestone for the Strata product line, as it provided businesses with even more advanced features and capabilities.

The introduction of Release 4 in 1992 brought even more new capabilities to the Strata DK24/56/96 systems, including new and improved digital telephones with LCD feature prompting and soft key operation. And in November of that same year, Toshiba introduced the DK16, a small hybrid/key system that brought digital technology to small system users.

The DK8 followed closely behind the DK16, completing the transition of the entire Strata product line to digital technology from end to end. With its introduction in April 1993, the DK8 replaced the Se in the Strata product line, providing powerful features that were rarely found in systems of this size.

In June 1993, Toshiba introduced another milestone product to the hybrid/key systems marketplace – the Strata DK280 Modular Digital Telephone System. This system replaced the DK24, DK56, and DK96 in the Strata product line and provided many advanced new features, significantly expanded the size of Strata systems, and made modular growth and migration more cost-effective than ever before.

The release of Strata DK280 Release 2 in June 1994 provided even more advanced features and capabilities, including ACD/MIS, Attendant Console, SMDI voice mail interface, and Pooled Line Key enhancements. These updates provided the most complete call-answering solution and flexibility available at the time and opened the door to many new call center application opportunities.

Toshiba continued to innovate and improve its Strata product line in the years that followed. In 1996, the release of Strata DK280 Release 3.0 provided multiple DNs, Caller ID/ANI, DNIS, and other important advanced hybrid features, while Computer Telephony Integration TAPI capabilities became available for all Strata DK systems, opening the door to many exciting new custom PC-driven applications. The release of the DK16e also added Caller ID and many new enhancements.

In 1997, the entire Strata DK product line was updated, with the DK14, DK40, and DK424 replacing the DK8, DK16e, and DK280. These updates expanded the system size and added feature enhancements. Release 3.1 added even more new features to the DK424, including the PC Attendant Console, which improved operator functionality, and Call Center Viewer, which provided more ACD display options. StrataLink also provided important CTI enhancements.

In 1998, Toshiba released several new products and enhancements, including the PC Digital Telephone.  However, since 2015 Toshiba has departed the Business Phone System industry.
